Design & amp!; Display

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha (SM-G850F) has a lower screen resolution (720 x 1280 HD) than the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) (1,080 x 1,920 Full HD). For both devices is the same display technology (SuperAMOLED) and the same scratch-resistant glass (Gorilla Glass 3) is used. The Alpha Galaxy is Samsung’s first Galaxy smartphone with a frame made of metal (the back is still plastic), which gives the phone a luxurious look. Samsung also calls the Alpha a “design-phone”. The housing of the Galaxy S5 is made entirely of plastic

Operating System

Both the Alpha Galaxy and Galaxy S5 comes with Android 4.4 KitKat (to be precise. Respectively version 4.4.4 and version 4.4.2). New for version 4.4 compared to previous Android editions include faster performance and better battery life. In addition, a new full-screen immersive mode in which each pixel is displayed on the screen (and all interface elements are hidden). Furthermore, in this version, Google Cloud Print (which you can print with appropriate apps wirelessly via WiFi) integrated. Google + Hangouts from Android 4.4 is the central place for communication: besides chat and video calls, you can now also send SMS and MMS messages from Hangouts. Both devices also feature Samsung’s TouchWiz 6.0 interface.

Processor

The Galaxy S5 is equipped with a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm 801 (with 2GB RAM) . This chipset can store data quickly or load from the fixed internal memory, which allows for faster performance. The Alpha Galaxy also has 2GB RAM and is equipped with a so-called octa-core processor. This is a processor which consists of two quad-core processors: a powerful 1.8GHz Cortex-A15 processor and an energy efficient Cortex-A7 processor. The Alpha can therefore properly distribute the energy between powerful and energy-efficient performance.

Camera

The Galaxy S5 has a camera with a 16-megapixel sensor, where the Galaxy Alpha is equipped with a 12 megapixel camera sensor. Both devices are equipped with an LED flash and provide the ability to capture videos. 2160p in 4K (Ultra HD) quality The Galaxy S5 is also equipped with a 2-megapixel Full HD front camera, the Galaxy Alpha with a regular 2.1-megapixel front camera. Both units offer the Dual Camera function, which you can take pictures. With the two cameras simultaneously Then you can merge the two photos, where you can choose from. Various frame effects

Memory

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is available in editions with 16GB or 32GB memory, this memory is expandable with a microSD memory card. The Galaxy Alpha has 32GB of memory, which, however, is not further expandable.

Special features

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is equipped with many of the special features that were previously on the Galaxy S5 were find. Important are the fingerprint scanner (which you can lock the device), the Ultra-Power Saving Mode (screen in black / white and off all unnecessary functionality to save battery), a built-in heart rate monitor and the S Health application (fitness and health applications). Unlike the Galaxy S5, however, the Galaxy Alpha not waterproof: a IPX7 certificate is missing in this phone

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is Samsung ‘designer gear’.. The device has a metal frame, where the Galaxy S5 has a full plastic case. The display of the Alpha is smaller and has a lower resolution than the S5. The camera sensor is smaller and a microSD card slot is missing. In addition, in contrast to the Alpha S5 not waterproof. Especially now that the device, to have been at a lower retail price available on the market after some time – – currently the Galaxy S5 seems a more attractive choice. Unless of course you necessarily want a ‘fashion conscious’ smartphone with metal frame.
